We don't store your data

Petrol Money does not collect, store, or share any personal information. No accounts, no tracking, no analytics.

Browser local storage

We use your browser's local storage solely to cache vehicle lookups (number plate → make/fuel type/MPG). This data never leaves your device and can be cleared at any time via your browser settings.

Third-party services

Route calculations use the OSRM routing API and Nominatim for geocoding. Postcode lookups use postcodes.io. These services may log your queries per their own policies.

Vehicle lookups

Number plate lookups are proxied through our server to the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service. We do not log or retain registration numbers.

URL sharing

When you share a calculation link, journey details are encoded in the URL. No data is stored server-side — the URL itself is the record.

⛽ Live fuel prices

Petrol Money fetches real-time petrol and diesel prices from the UK Government's Fuel Finder dataset, updated daily across thousands of UK forecourts.

🗺️ Route distance

Enter a From and To location — postcode or address. We calculate the driving distance using OpenStreetMap routing and find the nearest fuel station to your starting point.

🚗 Number plate lookup

Enter your UK number plate and we'll query the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service to auto-fill your fuel type and estimate your MPG from your vehicle's official CO₂ emissions figure.

💷 Cost calculation

We multiply your journey distance by your vehicle's fuel consumption to get litres used, then apply the live price per litre to give you the total fuel cost in pounds.

👥 Splitting the bill

Toggle Splitting with passengers to divide the cost fairly. Choose whether to include the driver in the split or have passengers cover the full cost.

🔗 Share your calculation

Hit Share with passengers to copy a link with your journey details pre-filled — send it to your group so everyone can see exactly what they owe.
